Buildings damaged after Kelowna hedge fire spreads

Kelowna firefighters have knocked down a large hedge fire that damaged several buildings and vehicles.

Platoon Captain Scott Clarke said multiple calls came in about the fire, in the 400 block of Barkley Road, at about 4:30 pm on Tuesday.

“The first arriving officer report[ed] a large hedge on fire at the rear of a residence with multiple exposures to vehicles and structures,” Clarke said in a bulletin.

The fire was ultimately upgraded to a second-alarm blaze.

Four buildings, one vehicle, two boats and five recreational vehicles were damaged, Clarke said.

Nobody was hurt.

“Firefighters attacked the fire from the front and the rear of the fire and were able to quickly knock the fire down and stop the spread,” Clarke explained.

He said the fire was caused by an accident involving “an outdoor electrical issue.”

The Kelowna Fire Department responded with four engines, a rescue unit, a command unit, safety unit and 21 fire personnel.
